Can a Cream Treat Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins, while not necessarily dangerous, can be unsightly and uncomfortable for those who suffer from them. They are caused by weakened or damaged valves in the veins, which allow blood to flow backward and pool in the legs, leading to bulging, twisted, and discoloured veins. While varicose veins can be treated with various methods, creams are becoming an increasingly popular option due to their non-invasive and convenient nature.

What is in these creams?

The active ingredients in these creams are designed to improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the walls of the veins. Some of the most common ingredients used in varicose vein creams include horse chestnut, arnica, witch hazel, and ginger. These natural ingredients are reported to have positive effects on blood flow and vein health, but it is important to note that creams should not be used as a replacement for other treatment options, such as compression stockings or lifestyle changes.

Horse chestnut extract – is a very common ingredient in varicose vein creams. It is claimed that Chestnut extract can, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the walls of the veins. It is thought to work by increasing the production of a compound called Escin, which is known to improve blood flow and reduce inflammation.

Arnica – is another ingredient often found in varicose vein creams. Arnica is used extensively for the treatment of bruising and inflammation post-operatively. It is a natural anti-inflammatory that can help reduce swelling and discomfort in the legs. It also claimed that it can improve blood flow and strengthen the walls of the veins.

Witch hazel – is an astringent that it is claimed can help to reduce swelling and discomfort in the legs. It also claimed to improve blood flow and strengthen the walls of the veins.

Ginger – is a natural anti-inflammatory, used in many herbal and health products. It is claimed that ginger can reduce swelling and discomfort in the legs, improve circulation and help strengthen the walls of the veins.

The use of creams for varicose veins is undoubtedly and understandably popular, they are cheap, non-invasive, and easily available.

But do they work?

It’s worth noting that there is very little published research evidence to support the claims of manufacturers. Even if the active ingredient is effective, some creams may still not be effective for treating varicose veins as the active ingredients may not penetrate deep enough into the skin to have an impact on the underlying vein issues. It is equally important to say that these treatments are almost certainly safe in most patients and very unlikely to be harmful.

In conclusion

Whilst there is little evidence to show their effectiveness, Varicose vein creams can be a help to many patients and are very unlikely to do harm. Varicose veins may however be a symptom of a more serious underlying condition, and it is important that the vein condition is properly assessed by an experienced vein specialist to rule out any underlying issues before trying to treat varicose veins with creams alone. Whilst creams can be helpful they are ultimately not a substitute for modern, evidence based minimally invasive vein treatment.
